Presenter: Letha B. Cole, MD
Topic: 'Psychoanalysis as Creative Collaboration'

Dr. Cole will discuss the psychoanalytic method as a collaborative creative process.  The method includes frequency of sessions, use of the couch, and freedom to explore associations without preconceived goals or objectives.  Using case material she will illustrate the similarity between psychoanalysis and other creative processes such as writing and the visual arts.  She will also explore the impact of psychoanalytic treatment on the practice of these creative endeavors. As a result of the talk audience members will be prepared to consider recommending psychoanalysis in situations where the desired transformative experience has not or is not likely to take place without the structure provided by the psychoanalytic method.  

Letha B. Cole, MD has been engaged in the private practice of Child, Adolescent and General Psychiatry and Adult Psychoanalysis since the early 1990s.  She recently relocated her practice from Houston to Austin, Texas.  She is board certified in Child and Adolescent and General Psychiatry and is certified by the American Psychoanalytic Association in Adult Psychoanalysis.  She serves on the Certification Committee of the American Psychoanalytic Association.  She is a Training and Supervising Analyst on the faculty of the Houston-Galveston Psychoanalytic Institute where she teaches and serves on the Executive Council.  She enjoys doing analysis and psychotherapy and particularly enjoys supervising and consulting work with therapists who are developing their analytic skills.
