Presenter: Elizabeth Danze, FAIA
Topic: 'Introspective Space- The Analytic Setting'
By focusing on the space in which psychotherapy takes place, this lecture considers the impact that the physical environment has on the unfolding treatment. The shared space between the psychotherapist and analysand is built around a powerful, creative and uniquely intimate experience. I will look at how the design of the room, the transitional sequence from outside to inside and from space to space is not a passive, but rather a full and active participant in the creative work of analysis.
Elizabeth Danze, FAIA, is an Associate Professor in the School of Architecture at the University of Texas at Austin and member of the Academy of Distinguished Teachers. Her work integrates practice and theory across disciplines by examining the convergence of sociology and psychology with the tangibles of space, construction, and details. She graduated with a Master of Architecture from Yale University and is a principal at Danze Blood Architects. Her work in Architecture and Feminism (as editor) and Psychoanalysis and Architecture (as both editor and author) extended the influence of architectural thought across several fields of study. She is currently co-editing Center #17, Space and Mind, Psychoanalytical Perspectives on Architecture - Architectural Perspectives on Psychoanalysis. She serves as an advisor to the American Psychoanalytic Association as a member of its Committee on Psychoanalysis and the Academy.
