Presenter: Sharon G. Horowitz, PhD
Topic: "Creating a Psychoanalytic Identity:
What is Psychoanalytic Enough?"
"Michael Parson’s in his book The Dove that Returns the Dove that Vanishes suggests “psychoanalysts become the analysts that they are by the ways they find of sustaining a creative tension… between the polarities …that lie at the heart of psychoanalysis.” This presentation will explore the creation and evolution of a psychoanalytic identity, addressing the role ASPP plays in that process. I will look at how the perceptions of the organization affect both its identity and its member’s ability to use it creatively for personal and professional development.
Objective:
To elucidate and explore the use of the community in the development of a unique professional identity.
Sharon Horowitz, PhD received her Master’s and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Kent State University. In 1975 she moved to Austin to work as a Staff Psychologist at the Mental Health Service at the University of Texas, later serving as the Coordinator of Training in Psychology. Since 1982 she has been in full-time private practice doing psychoanalytic psychotherapy, consultation and supervision. She was one of the founding members of ASPP, serving in the early years as president and education training chair. She considers herself a student of psychoanalytic theory and practice.
