The Austin Society for Psychoanalytic Psychology is very pleased to host Dr. Salman Akhtar, an internationally renowned psychoanalyst and gifted speaker for it’s 2010 Fall Conference. Dr. Akhtar will spend the morning enumerating the structural and dynamic aspects of poetry and discussing it’s healing aspects and application in psychoanalytic psychotherapy. In addition, Dr. Akhtar will delineate normal and pathological playfulness and describe the utilization of playfulness in clinical work. Lunch and informal conversation with Dr. Akhtar is then offered, or lunch on your own. This will be followed by the viewing of a film that Dr. Akhtar (not having previously viewed) will analytically discuss, in spontaneous fashion, along with audience participation. This will prove to be a lively and rich experience.
Dr. Akhtar has been described as one of the most original and creative voices in Psychoanalysis. He is Professor of Psychiatry at Jefferson Medical College and Training and Supervising Analyst at the Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia. Dr. Akhtar is the Book Review Editor of the Journal of Applied Psychoanalytic Studies, and has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association and the International Journal of Psycho-Analysis. He is the author of 10 books, 6 collections of poetry and more than 300 scientific publications. He has delivered many prestigious addresses at places such as the Mayo Clinic, Harvard, Yale, Brown, Emory and other major universities as well as the United Nations. In addition, Dr. Akhtar has presented lectures and addresses internationally, including the countries of Norway, France, Germany, Brazil and Holland.
