Insight and Collisions in Working with

Psychoanalytic Patients and Sex Offenders

By JoAnn Ponder, PhD

This presentation will examine the parallel career paths that led Dr. Ponder to become a psychoanalyst and sex offender treatment provider. It will interweave personal memoir, professional literature, and clinical vignettes, to describe a professional journey.

The challenges and ethical dilemmas that can occur when working with sex offenders in a private practice setting will be discussed, as well as the ways in which these two very different therapeutic modalities can influence and inform each other.

At the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:

  • ·         Describe two defense mechanisms that may underlie sexualized behavior
  • ·         List two factors that result in increased risk for sexual perpetration in a victim of sexual abuse
  • ·         Define Daniel Stern’s term “moment of meeting”
